Odio quando succede. Sarò conservatore, sarà che ho un giga e mezzo di archivi di posta elettronica dei quali sono piuttosto geloso, ma ogni qual volta gli sviluppatori del client di posta (o MUA: Mail User Agent) che uso decidono di introdurre innovazioni sostanziali al codice dello stesso, un brivido mi percorre la schiena, eseguo il backup di tutto e procedo con l’aggiornamento e il seguente avvio del programma per verificare gli eventuali disastri che di solito, fortunatamente, non si presentano all’appello…

Questa volta, però, il mio affezionatissimo evolution sulla mia prode e customizzatissima Gentoo Linux, mi ha fatto passare qualche ora non divertentissima…

Since Google doesn’t seem interested in releasing a 64 bit version of this useful Firefox extension (used in Wordpress, for example, to speed up the administrative section), I checked out the sources from its subversion repository and modified  the code as to be able to build it on a 64 bit architecture with GCC 4.3.

Google Gears license is the New BSD License, so here are the release notes:

As soon as I’ll have the time to do it, probably not for this but for the next release, instead of publishing just the binary version I’ll put online even the patch to  apply to Google Gears sources .

“Perché non c’è stato il Linux Day a Catania nel 2008?”

Questa è una domanda ricorrente che potrebbe anche sembrare strana se non si fosse a conoscenza della lunga tradizione che lega il GNU/Linux User Group di Catania al Linux Day sin dalla sua prima edizione del 2001.
All’epoca di quella prima edizione, il Linux Day ha avuto un ruolo fondamentale, che è stato quello di dare un grande risalto mediatico (e quindi una prima grande occasione di diffusione ad ampio spettro) ai memi di GNU/Linux e del Software Libero in genere che, fino a quel punto, avevano potuto contare su una diffusione all’interno di una nicchia culturale non troppo estesa, costituita da quanti avevano già maturato per proprio conto una certa sensibilità intellettuale, prevalentemente in ambito accademico o tra persone di cultura elevata ed abituate a investire sui temi dell’altruismo in varie forme di volontariato o associazionismo. Questo risalto è stato ottenuto aggregando più realtà ispirate in qualche misura agli stessi principi di base e riunendole attorno ad un’unica data ed un unico brand: il Linux Day 01, il decennale dal primo rilascio pubblico del kernel Linux.
